Nonprofit Give Blue Hope, Supported by Warren Buffett, Launches
Fundraising Campaign to Assist Families of Fallen Police Officers
OMAHA, Neb. – Give Blue Hope, a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to providing crucial support to families of fallen police officers, has announced the launch of a major fundraising campaign.
With the generous backing of renowned philanthropist Warren Buffett, Give Blue Hope aims to raise $1 million to jump start its mission. To kick things off, an anonymous donor has pledged to match the first $250,000 raised. Once $500,000 has been donated, Buffett has committed to matching the full amount, giving the nonprofit $1,000,000 to impact the lives of families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty.
To date in 2023, 22 police officers have lost their lives while protecting the communities they serve. These brave men and women put their lives on the line, and their families face unimaginable challenges and financial burdens in the aftermath of their tragic loss.
Founder and CEO Curtis DeBerg recognized the immediate financial needs faced by these families, having found himself in a similar situation many years ago. “I was lucky. I got to come home to my family,” said DeBerg, who sustained career-ending injuries back in 2001 while serving on the Waverly Police Department in Iowa. “I know many are not as lucky, and I’ve always had the desire to help.”
“What can one person do?” was the question that kept him from moving forward with a plan to help. DeBerg has served as a personal security officer for Buffett the last four years, but it wasn’t until a casual conversation during one of their recent drives that DeBerg found his motivation.
Buffett now serves as a mentor and inspiration to DeBerg. “Warren’s support and advice meant everything to me. Having someone like him believe in me and recognize the same need I saw, was what I needed to get the job done,” said DeBerg.
Often a deceased officer’s benefit package can take months to be paid out. Give Blue Hope seeks to bridge the financial gap by making an immediate contribution that will enable families to cover essential expenses such as groceries, car payments, and utility bills. “We are so grateful to all our donors, big and small, who have shown unwavering support to the officers who work tirelessly to protect our communities,” said DeBerg. “Their contributions will make a significant difference in the lives of the families left behind.”
Buffett expressed his commitment to the cause, stating, “I believe in the power of public participation and making a meaningful impact. Matching the donations is my way of encouraging others to join this important cause and help make a difference in the lives of these brave families.”
By rallying the community and garnering widespread support, Give Blue Hope aims to reach and surpass its initial fundraising target. The organization calls upon individuals, businesses, and philanthropic entities to contribute what they can to the cause.
To facilitate donations, Give Blue Hope has launched its official website at www.givebluehope.org. Visitors to the website will find detailed information about the organization’s mission, the services it provides, and the impact their donations will have. The website also offers a convenient and secure online donation platform, ensuring that contributions can be made easily and efficiently.
